Kailua-Kona is the Big Island's Historic Center
On the Big Island of Hawaii, the west side of the island is known as the Kona Coast with the Kailua-Kona area being the center of activity and attractions. Once a sleepy fishing village on Kailua Bay on the Pacific Ocean, the town is now a lively tourist center.
Kailua-Kona is known for its numerous black sand beaches produced when lava flows from the Kilauea Volcano reached the ocean. These beaches are ideal for sunbathing, swimming and snorkeling.
