On Payette Lake, expect half-day pontoon rentals to run about $400–$500 and full-day pontoons around $500–$650. Runabout/ski boats often land near $500–$600 per day, while premium wake and surf boats commonly range from about $900 to $1,300 per day. Personal watercraft (jet skis) are usually $350–$450 for a half or full day. Most rentals include U.S. Coast Guard–approved life jackets and basic safety gear, and many powerboat rentals include a towable tube or similar toys. Taxes and fuel are usually extra, and holiday pricing can apply. Your Getmyboat host will confirm the exact inclusions before you book.
Most visitors choose comfortable pontoons for relaxing and sightseeing, nimble runabouts for cruising and tubing, or specialized wake and surf boats for watersports. Larger “yacht-style” boats are uncommon on this alpine lake, so plan on well-equipped day boats rather than big cabin cruisers.
Both options are available. A captained outing is great if you want a stress-free day, help learning to wakesurf, or a built-in local guide. Self-operated rentals give experienced boaters maximum flexibility and value. Many operators require the primary renter to be 18+ (sometimes older for premium vessels) and to have prior boating experience. If you’re new to the lake or short on time, a captain is the easiest way to go.
Common meeting points include the McCall Municipal Boat Ramp at Legacy Park downtown and the Ponderosa State Park boat ramp. Some tours also use the public docks at Art Roberts Park in the heart of town. Your host will message exact directions, parking details, and any day-use fees for the launch you’ll use.
From the lake you’ll cruise past the forested peninsula of Ponderosa State Park, look up at Brundage Mountain and the Salmon River Mountains, and skirt quiet coves with frequent sightings of osprey and bald eagles. Many routes pass near Cougar Island, a locally loved landmark. Keep an eye out for playful wakesurfers—and, if you like local lore, the town’s mythical lake “resident,” Sharlie.
Idaho does not require a general boating license for adult boaters, but all operators must follow state and county rules. Children 14 and under must wear a life jacket while underway on boats 19 feet or less, and every vessel must carry a properly sized life jacket for each person on board. Local age limits apply for minors operating motorized vessels, and Valley County enforces a 300-foot no-wake buffer from shore and docks. If you’re unsure, choose a captained charter or ask your host to review the basics at check-in.
Yes—families are welcome. Operators provide U.S. Coast Guard–approved life jackets and required safety equipment. Let your host know children’s ages and approximate weights so the right sizes are set aside. For the smoothest ride with little ones, morning departures are typically calmer.
Most boats allow you to bring snacks, picnic items, and non-glass beverages. Coolers are fine; just pack out what you pack in. Alcohol rules mirror the road for operators—designate a sober captain or book a captained trip so everyone can relax. If your plan includes catered food or special setups, confirm details with your host in advance.
Pet policies vary by boat. Many pontoons welcome well-behaved dogs (sometimes with a modest cleaning fee), while high-end wake/surf boats are more likely to be pet-free to protect upholstery. Ask your host before booking, bring a towel for wet paws, and keep pets leashed at docks and parks.
Mountain weather can change quickly, especially in the afternoon. If conditions are unsafe, most hosts will reschedule or offer a weather-safe alternative per the policy on your listing. To give yourself options, consider morning starts and keep an eye on the forecast the evening before. Your captain has final say on weather-related calls.
Absolutely. Pontoons are ideal for casual celebrations, while surf boats are perfect for an action-forward day. Typical capacities range from 8 to 15 guests depending on the boat. Many rentals include a tube or basic watersports gear, and your host can suggest routes with scenic swim stops and photo-worthy backdrops.
Peak boating runs from late May through September, with the warmest water and longest days in July and August. Major holiday weekends—Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day—book out early and bring extra lake traffic. Local highlights include McCall’s Fourth of July fireworks over Payette Lake and the Classic Wooden Boat Show in early August, both of which are spectacular from the water. For smoother water and easier parking, choose weekday mornings. If you’re set on a summer weekend, reserve a few weeks in advance and plan to arrive 20–30 minutes early at the ramp.
