About Chania

The city of Chania is the second biggest in Crete with a population of around 60,000. It's considered the prettiest town of Crete and is undoubtedly a place that you should visit in the event that you visit the western side of Crete.

The city extends well past the old town. Most points of interest are within inside the Venetian stronghold divider in the old town. The Venetian harbor has countless bistros and restaurants, historical centers, museums, churches, Minoan unearthing, narrow alleys with picturesque houses, the famous lighthouse, and shops.

As Chania is the capital city of western Crete, it's open to tourists year-round. Travelers do need to be aware that some hotels and shops do close during the winter season between November and March. The biggest crowds form in late spring, particularly on the oceanfront at night. The evening temperatures make it an attractive destination. According to NOAA (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), the best times to visit Chania are from March 19th to June 10th or September 17th to December 9th. These are the months of perfect climate, temperature, and humidity.

Boating Activities in Chania

Chania's historical importance originated from its location as a port. The curving harbor constructed by the Venetians is a major focal point of Chania. The city is full of wooden fishing boats and ringed with fishing restaurants and bistros. It hums with guests in the summer and is very enchanting by night. Balos, Elafonissi, and Falasarna are Chania’s main boating attractions.

Balos is one of most spectacular beaches in Crete. Excursion boats rides are available to reach this enchanting white sand beach. It extends into a stunning turquoise and emerald-green lagoon. From there, one can swim through the knee-high ocean to the small islet of Gramvousa, crowned by a 16th-century Venetian fort. The beach is at its best after 5 pm after the excursion boats leave and you can enjoy the beach without the crowds.

Elafonissi beach lies about an hour boat ride from Chania on Crete's isolated southwest coast. The ride itself is worth it; the sea is turquoise-blue and the sand is composed of tiny pieces of shells and coral that take on pink hues in the certain light. The beach is ideal for families with kids due to the warm, shallow sea. One can swim through its ankle-deep water to an islet that is a habitat for migrating birds from Europe to Africa.

Like Elafonisi, Falasarna is popular with day-trippers because of its stunning beaches and clear turquoise blue sea. Located on the West coast of Crete, it is consists of several sandy beaches. It's a wonderful place to watch the sunset and visit the remains of a fortified Hellenistic harbor through exciting boat tours.

The beauty that the city has to offer is endless. The best way to experience it is by renting a boat. It’s an efficient way to experience all the islands. Fishing charters, kayaks, scuba trips and powerboats are available for adventurous travelers. Private chartered cruises in the city's famous port are perfect for intimate social gatherings.
