The Oregon Trail and Gold Rush of 1850 may have populated the region, but today the abundance of natural wonders and water resources have tourists and locals alike praising the land. How much does it cost to rent a boat in California?

California boat rentals cost anywhere from less than $100/hour to over $1,000/hour. It will depend greatly on the size and style of the boat, the itinerary you’re hoping to enjoy (if it’s a boat charter), the number of passengers, duration, and when you’re renting. Boat rentals over holidays, like the 4th of July, are always more expensive, but you can split the cost if you have a larger group onboard. Electric boat rentals in harbors around California are some of the most budget-friendly boat rentals, while luxury yachts will be on the more expensive end.

How much is it to rent a yacht for a day in California?

The typical yacht rental will cost between $750-$1,500 for a full-day rental, and this would include the captain’s fee but not a gratuity for the captain and crew onboard. Yacht charters will vary a lot in price depending on your itinerary and what is included, like food and beverages, entertainment, and more. If you’re cruising far distances, you may have to pay extra surcharges for fuel.

Do you need a license to rent a boat in California?

No — it is not required to rent a boat. Still, it’s highly recommended that you have a Boater Safety Education certificate or other boating license and previous boating experience before operating a boat in the state of California. Some rental companies might have their own requirements for renting, so it’s best to check with the owner or company before you rent. Safety is the number one priority, and having education and prior experience will keep you and your passengers safe.

Where is the best snorkeling in southern California?

30' Sun Tracker Party Hut Pontoon Double Deck with Water Toys Included

The boat was more spacious than I thought as compared to the description and picture. Would definitely recommend to others looking for a fun time with family or friends. Certainly a memorable experience for my friends and I. Emmanuel, our captain, was also very kind and understanding.

Summer’s End Sale, 13 Passenger Watersport Boat. Wake Surf, Board, and Tubing

We had such an awesome day cruising around Tahoe! John was great about communicating what to expect and quick to respond to all of our questions. The boat was great, there are plenty of cup holders and places to sit or lay out. And there is more than enough room for everyone to store their stuff so it’s not in the way. The top provides plenty of shade when you need it and folds up out of the way when you want some extra sun. There are internal ballast tanks and trim tabs to adjust the wake which makes it great for a group wanting to surf with varied ability levels. I would highly recommend, overall it was an amazing experience and we will be renting from John again next summer!

I had such an amazing time for my birthday. Such a beautiful yacht!! I highly recommend to book your next trip!! I love that it had a restroom for us ladies so that we didn’t have to stop somewhere. We saw a couple seals as well! Loved it.

Paulette was wonderful and her boat is perfect for larger groups and families with small children. She has everything you need for a beautiful day out on the water and took us to the best spots. Great captain and great company…thanks, Paulette!

Amazing Private Sailing Charter on 36' Sailboat in Marina del Rey with Captain

We took a 2hr sunset sail and smiled the entire time. We were just feeling great to know we nailed it with picking the perfect boat that was the right size and vibe which Matt should be credited for as he is a solid captain who lets you dictate how involved or not he was with our experience. Matt brought a few necessary items to make our trip plug and play (music, blankets to sit on at the bow, wine opener and glasses). Once the sails opened up and the music was on we were definitely on vacation at a reasonable cost for the amazing experience. We will be recommending and will be back! (Side note bringing sushi and wine was a win, we shared some with Matt once back in the marina and off the bow).

Summer’s End Sale, 13 Passenger Watersport Boat. Wake Surf, Board, and Tubing

We have 8 adults and 2 kids in the boat. The boat is new and spacious, it's even equipped with heating tubes to warm you up when you get out of the water. John is also very easy to communicate with. The weather wasn't good for the day we scheduled so John recommended doing it the next day. That definitely made our experience much better.
