With me on board, you get a mature, seasoned professional with a lifetime of boating experience so I can provide you with training, a boating vacation, consulting or deliver your boat to a new destination to help you realize your boating dreams. I grew up in a boating family on Chesapeake Bay. My father was a US Navy “SeaBee” non-commissioned officer who served in the Pacific in World War 11. He taught me the “old school” way on wooden boats from an early age and I learned how to navigate with paper charts, a compass, depth sounder and binocular. Even with the fancy gadgets and electronics of today, I believe that nothing beats plain old fashioned seamanship and “sea sense”. When I was 19 I worked and lived aboard a 72′ wooden ketch and obtained my US Coast Guard “Captain’s License” shortly thereafter. A few days after graduating from college, I started working full-time as an instructor with the Annapolis Sailing School and purchased a small sailboat. That fall I sailed a 33′ boat from Annapolis to Puerto Rico, navigating with a plastic sextant and radio direction finder. For many seasons I was a manager for a yacht charter company and took hundreds of guests out on sail and power boat trips. I opened Adventures Afloat that marketed, booked and provided yacht charters on vessels up to 150′. My work is not a hobby, weekend job or a retirement pursuit but serving my clients in a professional manner is my livelihood. I am continually investing in training, re-certification and equipment to better serve you. I have a masters of arts degree in journalism, speak Spanish and have worked in government and private business. I have also been devoted to protecting the Chesapeake Bay through working at the USEPA Chesapeake Bay Program Office and the Maryland Sea Grant Program. My writing has been published in a wide variety of national and local publications as well as books and I have been a guest speakertrainer in 20 states and Washington, DC. I wrote a weekly newspaper column for three years and had a daily radio show. As a homeowner, father and boatowner, I appreciate the value you place on your boat and the achievement of becoming a boat owner. In 2015 I purchased a 1980 Morgan 38′ and restored her to the comfortable and well-found vessel today that I make available for lessons and charters. In 2018 I plan to move aboard and sail her with studentspassengers (you perhaps?) to Florida and the Bahamas. Please contact me for personal attention to your questions and plans.
