This was an incredible experience for my family and me and we will never forget the joy and serenity of sailing on Hokahey with Jan and his lovely wife, Ellen. Jan and Ellen made us feel welcome and at ease from the moment we met them. In addition to being a very experienced and safe captain, Jan has a deep appreciation for and connection with the bay and the sea. Great day on the water! Thank you Jan and Ellen!!
Everything went amazing! Jan is a great captain. We got on of the best sunsets of the season. It was phenomenal!
I grew up sailing on the East Coast in Florida, but haven’t sailed in many years at this point. My wife and I are thinking of getting back into sailing, so we looked for someone in the Bay Area with a catamaran that we could go out on and hope to ask questions and observe. Then, we found Jan! We spent a day out with him on the Hokahey and sailed around the Bay, and can’t recommend sailing with Jan more. We had an absolutely wonderful experience. Jan helped me remember the basics of sailing, and my wife was shocked at how much she learned. If you’re looking for someone with a lot of experience to learn from, some cool stories, and someone to spot wildlife with, Jan is your guy!
Jan's a gem. We were incredibly fortunate to get to sail the bay with him. He helped my girlfriend and I learn more about sailing, was knowledgable about the bay and surrounding waters, and really cares about both people and the earth. If you have the chance to sail with him, don't pass it up.
Jan was an amazing captain and host. He communicated prior to our adventure helping set our expectations. Upon arrival his vessel was accurate if not much better than the photos revealed. While we were a little nervous prior to arrival at the docks, Jans welcome and sail boat put us at ease right away. He is very professional, but also very easy going in allowing us the freedom to walk around his boat and ask him anything. We had an amazing, eye opening, afternoon trip and would recommend anyone visiting the Bay Area to do a similar trip. We have lived here for almost 3 years now and while on the water, felt like we were experiencing a totally new and exciting environment. Highly recommend Jan.
Captain Jan is licensed by the US Coast Guard. Jan has been sailing for over 30 years. He has sailed up and down the east and west coasts of North America, as well as in Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Mexico, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. Jan loves to share sailing stories, as well as stories of his work abroad doing peacekeeping and peacebuilding. He served as skipper on The Golden Rule in 2015 and 2017 - the boat that inspired Greenpeace and helped end nuclear testing back in 1958! In 1998, Jan solo sailed from Burlington, Vermont to St. John, US Virgin Islands and back. Ask him about the submarine that surfaced in front of him just north of Puerto Rico! Captain Jan loves to teach sailing! If you wish, you are welcome to take a turn at the helm, haul on the ropes, read the chart plotter and more!
