Narrows Lockstation The question you have to ask here is 'why is there a lock in the middle of a lake?' When building the canal cut through, The Isthmus, the watershed divide at Newboro, bedrock was discovered and impeded the process. To continue with the canal it was decided to build a dam and lock here. This created Upper Rideau Lake. An interesting stop here is Murphy’s Point Provincial Park which was created to protect this lock which is one of the four blockhouses built on the Rideau.
