What Type of Tuna Can We Catch?

The species we mostly target are the prized Bluefin tuna Thunnus maccoyii  but the more common Albacore tuna Thunnus alalunga is often caught as the schools intermingle.

What size tuna do you catch?

There’s two general sizes of fish that are caught. The main school fish which are far more plentiful typically weigh in at around the 15-20kg mark. Then you get into barrel territory with bluefin which can weigh from around 60-150kgs. Try and beat our 143kg record! Obviously these larger fish are found in far more limited numbers so are caught less frequently than the smaller school fish.

When is the best time to catch tuna in Victoria?

The best time to catch bluefin tuna is between the months of March to July each year. With that said there’s often fish which stick around all year, just in smaller numbers. The 2015 season went very late as fishermen were still catching large barrels into October.

How Long is your charter?

Tuna charters are a full day charter of approximately 7-8 hours. We have to troll for these fish and cover large distances in the boat. Sometimes we can bag out quite early in the day and it’s up to you whether you want to come back into port or stay out catching and releasing.

How much do tuna charters cost?

Standard prices are $350 per person per day. Pricing depends a lot on how many people book on each charter so definitely give us a contact to arrange the best deal we can. Larger numbers, mid week bookings or last minute spots we need to fill can sometimes bring the price down.

Where do you operate from?

We leave from Apollo Bay marina and travel up and down the coastline reasonably close to shore. Bluefin tuna don’t sit still so there will be a lot of trolling and distance covered on this charter. Be prepared for a big day on the water!
