Enjoy a memorable fishing in lake Taupo, New Zealand by boat for up to 6 people. Hire a 23' Cuddy Cabin Haines Hunter for as low as $330 NZD per hour. All quality gear provided.

The "Maverick" is a 7 metre Haines Hunter with enclosed cabin toilet. It is powered by a 225 hp Yamaha assisted by an 8hp trolling motor. It gets us to the best fishing spots in comfort – fast.

Boat fishing on Lake Taupo offers many angling opportunities from fly fishing to sighted, cruising Rainbows, spinning, down rigging, jigging and trolling. December to March large Browns congregate around the river mouths. Early morning is the best time to target these fish.

We provide the ultimate fly fishing experience for rainbow and brown trout with a professional guide and qualified charter boat skipper. There is also a holiday home available with great views over Acacia Bay and the lake.

Options include fly fishing Lake Taupo tributaries or back country rivers, quad bike adventure fishing, boat fishing, helicopter access to remote waters.

Afternoon in the summer months can produce some great sport, casting cicada patterns to cruising Rainbows.

Fishing Options:

- Drive/walk/wade
Many fishing locations are within 1 ½ hours drive, some as close as 10 minutes.

- Local rivers
Fishing the tributaries of Lake Taupo when the trout are spawning is best between May and September. Catch rainbows and browns, commonly weighing 4-6lb but with larger also fish present.

- Back country rivers
Enjoy a full days fishing in remote locations, on pristine rivers set amid stunning scenery for rainbows and browns, some of trophy size (for example, the upper Tauranga-Taupo and Okupata Stream, a tributary of the Whanganui River)

- Drive/4X4 quad bike
Some excellent wilderness fishing is accessible by quad bike.

- Charter boat fishing
Fish the stunning Western Bays of Lake Taupo using the method(s) of your choice from Maverick, CPF's 7-metre Haines Hunter with a 225 Yamaha 4 stroke motor and an 8 HP 4 stroke auxilary motor. The boat is fitted with two down-riggers and is also suitable for harling, jigging and sightseeing.

- Helicopter
Flying by helicopter in to remote backcountry streams and rivers is the ultimate all round fishing experience. October to April are the best months.

- Multi-day packages
Multi-day guided fishing trips can be arranged with overnight camping or hut accommodation available.


  • Central Plateau Guiding have their own new Zealand "bach" (holiday home) that they can let out to clients. With stunning views over Acacia Bay and Lake Taupo this is a great base for all fishing around the central North Island.
  • The bach is 5 minutes drive from Taupo township and has: Full kitchen facilities, Two bedrooms, Extra sofa bed, Breakfast basket available on request, Local pub and cafe nearby

  • Harling: This is the slow trolling flies to catch fish. The crater edge of the lake is around 6m and this is a great place to harl.
  • Jigging: This is basically dangling the flies in front of the fish. Best during the summer months when the lake has warmed up.
  • Down rigging: Down rigging gets the lures to a precise depth where the fish are. In the summer the thermocline is the target area. During the cooler months the fish move in shallower and a down rigging – harling combo can be very effective.
  • Sight Seeing: We custom design the trip for you. All fishing trips can include some sightseeing if desired. Maori Carvings, waterfalls, scenic bays, picnics on the shore are all possible, just ask.
  • Quad bike adventure fly fishing (approx 10 hours) : From $850 NZD
  • Boat fishing on 7 metre boat (3 hours minimum): From $300 NZD

Rental Requirements
