Lake Michigan is the 3rd largest Great Lake. The lake is 307 miles long and up to 118 miles wide, an area of 22,300 sq. miles with a maximum depth of 925 feet. That's a lot of water and it's home to a lot of fish. Salmonoids were stocked in Lake Michigan as a predator for alewives beginning with Coho in 1969 and Chinook or King Salmon in 1970. The introduction of more salmon species soon followed and made possible the outstanding sport fishery we enjoy today.
