Frequently Asked Questions:

• What do I need to bring?

  • A sun hat, sun screen, soft soled non-marking (preferably white soled) shoes,  a windproof jacket and comfortable clothing. Don’t forget your camera!
  • Water, tea, coffee, cheese and biscuits are provided.

• Can we charter the boat without a skipper?

  • If you have the qualifications and/or the experience, the Astrolabe is available for bareboat charters. We almost always go out for a quick “run through” to show you the ropes and check that it’s a good match. In order for you to charter, someone on board will need to have a mobile phone so we can communicate with you, in addition to the VHF radio.

• Do I need any sailing experience?

  • No experience needed. Our skipper will handle the boat. If you’d like to take a hand at steering, pulling a line, or learn more about sailing, he’ll be happy to show you the ropes.  If you’re already a sailor, he’ll make tea.

• Where do we sail?

  • Our Ruby Island/Harbour Cruise sails across the Roys bay towards Ruby Island and into the main part of the lake and around to Bremner Bay
  • Half and Full day charters, weather depending, can go to Bishop’s Bay, Glendu Bay,  Dublin Bay and on to Mou Tapu and Moe Waho Islands.

• What can we expect with the wind?

  • Afternoons tend to be windier, mornings calmer. Spring can be windy. If you’re looking for a more relaxed sail, having a picnic on board, or, you want more of an adrenaline, riding the wind, adventure, keep that in mind when booking. The skipper will check the wind and weather and let you know the best time to go depending on what your interests.  We do keep a close eye on the wind and tend to play it conservatively with the weather.
