So long as you are over 8 years old, are reasonably fit and can swim 50 metres we can teach you to surf. Safety is essential and our experienced surf coaches are also qualified beach lifeguards. We tailor our sessions to meet your needs, and make sure you get the best possible experience in the water. Most people start to learn to surf in the summer, when the water and air is a little warmer, although you'll generally always need a wetsuit of some kind in the UK! Waves get a little bigger in the winter time, although aren't always consistent, but that's when the majority of advanced surfers will be seen in the water. Cornwall and North Devon offer the most consistent and accessible waves in the UK, so once you've got your basic skills down there's a great excuse to book yourself a beach holiday! A general level of fitness will always help with surfing, but one of the best ways to develop your fitness for the sport is to keep surfing! Flexibility, balance, agility and improved strength and energy will get you better results, more satisfaction, longer water time and improve your ability to pull off some radical manouveres! If you have any questions, we can answer those through GetMyBoat’s messaging platform before you pay. Just hit, “Request to Book” and send us an inquiry for a custom offer.

Anyone and everyone who can swim regardless of age in theory, although we tend to teach people from age 8 upwards. If you are younger and keen speak to us first before booking so we can advise if a surf lesson is feasible for your age. A decent level of fitness will help, but you don't have to turn pro to enjoy surfing - the best surfer is the one having the most fun, even if that involves falling off a few times! If you're interested give it a go...  What experience do I need to have? No experience is neccessary, but you will need to be able to swim and feel fairly confident in the water. We use 50m as a good distance people should be able to comfortably swim before learning to surf. Beginners start in shallow water though so we will work at a pace you feel comfortable with.  What equipment do I need to bring? If you have your own board and wetsuit bring them with you. If you don't, suitable ones will be provided. You should bring a towel and swimsuit to wear underneath the wetsuit. Sunscreen and a warm top for after your surf are also not a bad idea, and possibly a bottle of water and small snack for when you're done, as you can use up a lot of energy in the water. How long are the sessions? Each session lasts either for half a day (2hrs) or a full day (4hrs delivered in 2hr x 2 sessions) - you choose which suits you. You can book a one off session, or benefit from discounts on prices by booking a short course of a few together.  How many people are in each session? This depends on you, but for group bookings no more than 8-10 people will be in any one group session. If you have a larger group we can either run two sessions back to back or two instructors will go in the water with you. We currently have a maximum number of teaching 30 people in a group (with 3 instructors) at any one time. We offer you the opportunity to learn at your own pace, with one to one attention so you can learn on your own or bring a friend or two, it's up to you. What levels do you teach at? We offer surf instruction for beginners and improvers and specialist surf coaching for more advanced surfers wanting to develop their skills further, or those interested in turning pro or wanting to learn techniques for competitions. Sessions are suitable for both adults and children and are tailored to your needs.  When and where does surf coaching take place? Lessons can be arranged for any time or day of the week, subject to availability. We are based in Porthcawl, but teach down the South Wales coastline. We'd generally go to the beach with the best conditions for your ability at the time of your lesson - we go where the waves are! Who can learn to surf?
