These are well suited to the first time user. We also have a limited number longer, faster kayaks with prior experience required. Our tandem versions are the Malibu 2 XL from Ocean Kayak. Kayaks are popular right now! Perhaps the time is right to consider one of our handmade redwood outriggers, our most popular boat. Sit on top kayaks are great for beginners and we have several models from the oldest name in the industry, Ocean Kayak. For the more experienced kayaker, we offer Current Designs Storms and the Necky Eskia. These boats have a great cruising speed and are foot rudder equipped. Solar Eco Cruise Solar Eco Cruises depart daily, from Catch a Canoe at 11:30 am. This tour runs from June 19th through September 2nd. Now celebrating it's 40 year anniversary, Catch a Canoe & Bicycles Too has just added an amazing new boat to its fleet of 18 handmade redwood outrigger canoes. Sporting three distinct modes of propulsion, this ultra-stable outrigger uses the wind, solar & battery power, as well as the human power to cruise along Mendocino's beautiful Big River Estuary. Designed by Catch a Canoe's Rick Hemmings, and made locally by Bob Cummings of Secret Harbor Boat Works, this double hull, 33-foot outrigger canoe has been christened Solar Wind. All on board systems are controlled by an experienced guide who sits in a solo hull alongside the main hull, which allows a clear line of sight. This unique twin hull configuration is both efficient and fast and is significantly more stable than traditional canoes. Sunset 'Til Dark Bioluminescence Tour Bioluminescence is a unique part of paddling on Big River during the summer months. The soft visible glow is actually a defense mechanism used by tiny dinoflagellate organisms. When disturbed, a chemical reaction within the organism sends out a brief flash of light. The intensity of the phosphorescence is dependent on ambient light. The darker the night, the more visible it becomes. On a moonless night, it is usually possible to see the bow wake and all paddle strokes awash in tiny firefly-like green sparkles. Sometimes it is also possible to see fish darting by underwater as the boat passes overhead. Big River Estuary Wildlife Tour Big River is certainly a very special place. Here at Catch a Canoe we have listened to the stories of thousands of paddlers who've returned to our dock. Our first question typically is: how was your trip? The answer that invariably comes back more than any other is - “we saw some seals!” or “we saw the family of otters!” As enjoyable as paddling a canoe or kayak up beautiful Big River is, it's the wildlife which really grabs us the most. Seeing the marine mammals and abundant bird life is wonderful, but having an opportunity to learn all about them from an experienced local naturalist is the best way to fly/paddle!
