Captain Mark's favorite, the trifecta of excursions (Boat Walk Beach), with a destination right dab in the middle of Shackelford Island. A stop is made either prior or after onshore south and west of Shackleford Slue. With a pickup of no more than 6 private passengers in Atlantic Beach, Morehead City, or Beaufort, we cross the Beaufort Inlet, a natural passageway into the Atlantic Ocean, then travel approximately 4.5 miles in the protected waters along Shackelford Island’s Back Sound to historic Whale Creek. Either beached or anchored just a few feet from shore, on a bright sunny day you will think you are in the Caribbean with its clear blue-green waters. Captain Mark will lead you on a guided tour utilizing a circuit trail to the ocean side of the island. On this hike/walk through a maritime forest, dunes, and grasslands Captain Mark hopes to point out some of the flora and fauna, including a significant chance of sighting the famous local Shackelford Banker Horses. Then, as if we were the first people to sight the ocean you will arrive at a secluded paradise beach to discover most likely by ourselves. Identifying marine shells will be our activity and appreciating the sheer beauty of the dunes and waves will be our companion as we walk along this beach. Then, and almost without notice, we will head back into the dunes for a dramatic scene of the sound with its picturesque colors while paralleling historic Whale Creek. These will be must photos! Of course, a dip in the water is always refreshing! Back onboard, Captain Mark will take you through the north end of Middle Marshes of The Rachel Carson Reserve up the entire Taylor Creek along historic Beaufort’s Front Street. From Lennoxville Point back west to downtown you will have the town on your right and the Rachel Carson Preserve on your left. We have often seen wild horses on these islands as well. One of the many dependable resources Captain Mark uses is The Pursuit of Leviathan: A History of Whaling on the North Carolina Coast by Marcus B. Simpson, Jr. and Sallie W. Simpson.
