Boating Guide - Marmaris

About Marmaris

Located in southwestern Turkey, Marmaris is a gorgeous resort town in the Turkish Riviera. It’s a popular vacation destination for travelers coming by cruise ship or yacht, with many seaside restaurants, bars, shops, and nightclubs. It’s a great destination for budget travelers looking to enjoy some time in the sun and in the beautiful waters of Turkey’s Turquoise Coast.

The busy tourist season in Marmaris runs from April to October, with the peak being in July and August. The best time of year to visit Marmaris is during the shoulder months of April & May and September & October. The weather will be warm but the crowds will be more controlled during these months. If you’re looking to get in a lot of sunbathing on your vacation, July and August are better months for a visit, but it’s essential to be careful during peak sun hours. Between 12-3 it can be dangerous to be outside for longer than a few hours. It’s also more expensive during July & August so booking in advance is crucial.

To get to Marmaris, the closest airport is Dalaman which is just over an hour by car. This airport services many budget airlines flying from European cities. To get around the area of Marmaris, there are a lot of minibuses that are inexpensive and frequent.

Boating in Marmaris

One of the tops recommended things to do in Marmaris is to take a day cruise to explore some of its natural beauty. On a cruise, you’ll see the famous turquoise coves, mountains that compose the shoreline, ancient ruins and you’ll enter a cave that is only accessible by boat. Many of these cruises are by beautiful wooden Gulet boats and often come with food and drinks to enjoy while spending a day on the water.

If you rent or charter a boat, it’s recommended to cruise around the Bay in a counterclockwise direction. Most of the group tour boats go in a clockwise direction, meaning that you’ll be stopping at the same points of interest as hundreds of other tourists throughout the day. On a private boat, you can customize with your captain and choose a quieter route to have a more intimate experience.

Fishing charters leaving from Marmaris are a fun way to spend half a day on a boat with an experienced captain, seeing what you can catch. All your tackle and equipment is provided and the waters are calm and pleasant to fish in. If you have members who aren’t interested in dropping in a line, they can soak up the sun on the boat deck while you wait to reel in “the big one!”

For adventurous travelers looking to ride some serious waves, we have a white-water rafting expedition that leaves from Marmaris. The river you’ll raft on is a 2-hour drive from Marmaris and transport is included. Spend 3 hours riding the rapids with your team in an inflatable boat, an adrenaline-inducing experience that you’ll never forget!

A popular water sport for tourists in Marmaris to try is parasailing. See the beauty of the turquoise waters of Marmaris and the surrounding landscape from a bird’s eye view.

Boating Events in Marmaris

The Marmaris International Yacht Festival takes place annually every May. It showcases hundreds of beautiful gulets, yachts, and motorboats. There are hundreds of beautiful vessels to see at the festival, making it a great time to visit the city if you’re a boating enthusiast.

In autumn, the International Race Week takes place and dozens of sailors register and compete in a fun week of regattas. There are other events organized at hotels and nearby venues for spectators and participants alike.

Other Things To Do

There are a lot of day trips and tours leaving from Marmaris to satisfy any travelers craving for adventure. Jeep “safari” tours through the mountains to picturesque towns and hidden beaches are a great way to get out and about while on vacation in Marmaris.

A luxurious experience at an affordable cost that everyone should have while in Turkey is a visit to a Turkish Bath or Hamam. Enjoy a massage, sauna, body peel and thorough cleanse with the experts. This is the ultimate choice for a spa-lover!

If you love getting a glimpse into ancient history, a visit to Dalyan is a must. The tombs are well-preserved, and there is a lot of natural wildlife in the surrounding area. Dalyan is excellent for a visit by boat on the river or for a day of walking around and exploring.

Marinas in Marmaris

Not only is it a must-visit spot for boat lovers visiting Marmaris, the Marmaris Marina is a top stop for all tourists. It provides beautiful views of the boats moored in their berths, the nearby old castle, and mountains in the background. There are heaps of restaurants and shops around this area, making it a great place to take a stroll and have a meal. Watching the sunset from here is a great idea. Albatros Marina and Marmaris Port are other nearby boat clubs to check out.
