Catch Some Rays or Dinner on a Fishing Charter in Mayo, Ireland

Based at the Quay, Ballina, Co. Mayo, sea trout is my specialty and the estuary of the world renowned river Moy is my hunting ground. Since I was a boy fishing with my dad my passion has been sea trout and much experience has been gained over the years. In’73 my hobby became a business and I still enjoy that great buzz… expectation with every cast! I offer a selection of boats to suit all and tackle is provided if required. The Moy Estuary The Moy Estuary begins at Ballina, Co. Mayo and runs for five miles before entering Killala Bay. It is narrow and lined with stone walls for about three and a half miles before opening out into a huge basin. It then narrows again between Nick Faldo’s Bartra Island and Enniscrone Beach. Bait Method Since I was a kid I have fished the traditional bait method… a spinning rod with mackerel strip or sandeel. Fishing mackerel strip for seatrout is unique to the Moy and can be traced back to the 1840’s. To be really successful it takes a delicate touch on light tackle. My business is strictly angling on the river Moy estuary for sea trout and I run a charter business. I have 19' open boats with 15hp outboards For best results…cast, pick up the slack and allow the bait to “swing” in the tide. Keep the bail arm off and rest the line on the tip of the index finger so you can react immediately to a bite. I use a Kamasan specimen hook…size 8 on a 6/8 lb mono line. I prefer this hook as it has a short shank and a wide gape. The weight should be adjusted at the various stages of the tidal flow to avoid picking up crabs on the bottom. Alternatively, you can “spin” the strip. The same applies to fishing the sand eel. PRICES - 260.00 Euro - per day (max four anglers)
