ADVENTURE ON THE BIGGEST WHITEWATER We believe the best way to experience the Nile’s whitewater is by kayak. Short on time, or simply looking to go to some of the hardest rapids straight away, tandem kayaking lets you (with little or no experience of kayaking before) take on some of the biggest and best rapids in a single day. You will be paddling along with the Nile River Explorers (NRE) whitewater rafting trip. For those who like the idea of having their own craft, taking on the whitewater and getting the best experience, or simply for those who have done rafting before and want to step it up, tandem kayaking is perfect. You sit in the front of these double seater kayaks and provide the power to get through the waves. Your guide, in the back seat, has the job of instructing you when to put in the energy and steering you both safely down the rapids. Facing huge wave chains, crashing white water and powerful hydraulics, it’s a team effort between you and your guide to make it through all the rapids successfully. Should you end up on the wrong side of a crashing wave and get flipped by the water, it is not necessarily time for a bath just yet. Unlike a rafting flip, where you could end up a long way from the boat having to swim rapids on your own, if you can hold your breath and hold on for 3 to 5 seconds (you can try it now to practice) your guide will attempt to roll you both back up. You can be back upright in the middle of the rapid having performed the hero move, and in the game for the rest of the waves. Each rapid is followed by calm water, giving you time to let the adrenaline settle before getting another hit. This calm water also gives you time to go to the rafts, regroup and swap courageous stories with everyone else. These gaps are your chance to top-up on sunscreen, and take it easy for a while. At lunch we will provide you with drinking water and biscuits with large fresh chunks of pineapple. Each of the rapids on the river are spectacular, and on most other rivers, they would all be the feature rapids. Here however there is some strong competition for the title of ‘best rapid’ but two standout. The Bad Place, and Nile Special. The Bad Place (see main picture), is one of the biggest single features that you will take your boat through. Running either left, right, or straight through the middle of this monstrous hole, this feature really gets the heart pumping. Nile Special is the last rapid of the day and certainly not a disappointment. Despite having navigated some of the world’s best moving water already, the biggest and most challenging wave chain is yet to come. Nile Special contains Club wave, Bell’s hole (above) and of course the main Nile Special wave that the rapid is named after. With Nile Special still vividly fresh in your mind, the day ends just downstream. An open bar stocked with cold drinks and a wholesome buffet waits for you at the bottom. We owned and operated by the husband and wife team of Sam and Emily. A business that runs among the tropical islands of the Nile River, our core goal is to introduce more people to the amazing sport of kayaking in this idyllic location. Before we became the owners here we travelled the world to kayak, whether that was to train and compete, (Emily has represented Great Britain 4 times in the Freestyle Kayaking World Championships while Sam is the British team coach) or to explore and coach on some of the most exciting rivers in the world. While solely running Kayak the Nilersquos sister company Love it Live it, we lived a nomadic life by the river and used kayaking as the excuse to explore and learn about the world. Drawn by the promise of big volume whitewater at the source of the worlds longest river, a relaxed lifestyle and the perfect eternal summerrs climate, itr unsurprising that we arrived in Uganda, and as Sam puts it l essence we just forgot to leaverd. We believe the Nile is one of the worldrs best rivers to teach on thanks to the warm water and spectacular scenery, and fabulous training features. Uganda has a firm grip on our hearts. Through Kayak the Nile we get the pleasure of showing people this amazing river for the first time and let them share the experiences that have kept us coming home to Jinja for the majority of the last 10 years.
