We will take you out on a Reliance custom built 10 meter charter vessel with the highest quality safety and fishing equipment on board.

She is a very stable vessel and on rare occasions has been in deep seas with swells ranging from 5-6 metres, and coped with winds gusting up to 115 knots. She is capable of handling these atrocious conditions extremely well and has proven her seaworthiness each time. However, your health and safety is paramount and we take no chances with the weather. If weather conditions are unsuitable for going out, we may have to postpone your trip to another time.

There is a toilet and BBQ on board.

For those longer trips, she can also sleep two passengers. We cater for all levels of fishing experience, from the expert fisherman to the novice with all training provided and gear supplied.

All fish is filleted, ready for cooking or, if preferred, catch and release.

We are serious about sustainability of the fisheries and give all fish that are too small or are breeding stock back to the sea, so fish stocks can continue to be plentiful.

So I see you are interested in fishing? So am I!

Skipper Tomo, has had years of experience at sea and offers fisher men and women with two options:

A part day option of fishing in relative close proximity to Kaikoura, or
A full day fishing excursion out to deeper sea depths.

The part day option offers the opportunity to catch a variety of fish, including the infamous crayfish (New Zealand lobster) which are plentiful around the Kaikoura coastline. The name Kaikoura, given to this area by Maori, literally translates to food (kai) and lobster (koura), reflecting the abundance of this food source in the area. Easy to catch fin fish include sea perch, which are particularly abundant, delicious to eat and can often be caught two at a time on a double rig leader. Blue cod are also abundant, and are regarded as one of the finest eating fish in New Zealand.

Other fish, such as Terakihi, Gurnard and Grouper are often caught, but the thrill for many is when it comes time to haul in the crayfish pots. When these are hauled to the surface, more often than not they contain crayfish, which once checked by you for compliance with New Zealand fisheries regulations, are able to be taken home with you.

With fishing there are never any guarantees, but in most cases you will likely take home one of these magnificent eating crustaceans for your evening meal! As for the time you spend out at sea? Just ask Tomo - he's happy to discuss the options, from a one hour scenic tour, or a four hour crayfish and fishing experience.

For the more serious anglers, upgrade your fishing adventure trip to a full day deep sea excursion and be in the running to catch grouper, blue nose and sharks. At a depth of 250 metres of water, giant grouper lurk and are readily caught on the fishing equipment and baited lures we provide you with. This could be your opportunity to catch the biggest fish ever in your lifetime! Grouper can weigh up to 40 kgs, are a thrill to catch and excellent eating.

Whether you choose a part day or full day trip, your fish will be processed for you in transit, bagged up and be ready to take away with you upon your departure. Baiting of hooks, the sorting out of tangles and even removing the fish from the hook can all be taken care of by Tomo’s deckhand.

Tomo has vast fishing experience and is your basic and classic Kiwi bloke! A dry sense of humour and a passion for ensuring that you receive the best possible fishing experience he can deliver, a great day awaits you on Kaikoura Fishing Tours.

About Kaikoura

Just two kilometres offshore from the town is a nutrient upwelling zone from a long oceanic trough, known as the Hikurangi Trench which extends down the east coastline of New Zealand. This easily accessible, nutrient rich area provides ample food for marine life to thrive.

Many deep water species can be found close to the shore, along with marine mammals such as whales, dolphin and seals. The area is also abundant in bird life, which includes Gannets, Buller’s Mollymawk, Royal and Wandering Albatross, a variety of Shearwaters, Petrels, Prions, Seagulls, Terns, Penguins, Oyster Catchers and Cormorants (Shags).

Kaikoura is known as the beautiful South Island's fishing capital, but there's so much more to do here.
