Cruising World Magazine proclaimed Islander 36 sailboats to be "One of the "World's Twenty Best Boats". Two Islander 36's sailed around the world. Islander 36 sailboats participate in the renowned annual Transpac Race -- from Los Angeles to Honolulu every year. And there is a large fleet of Islander 36's in San Francisco Bay -- a very challenging body of water. Islander 36's were designed by Alan Gurney. He was born in England. At age 13 he sailed across the Atlantic Ocean. Later he would go on expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctica. He understood firsthand what was necessary for a sailboat to be truly seaworthy. And he knew that a fast boat is a safe boat -- able to escape (or withstand) diminishing weather conditions. To add to the innovation of the Islander 36, Naval Architect Gurney asked Industrial Designer Joseph Artese to design the interior of the Islander 36.
