River Liffey The famous River Liffey is an extraordinarily rich limestone river which flows for most of its course through County Kildare – Irelands Horse County. The Rye Water A tributary of the Liffey, the Rye Water is a classic dry fly stream. It differs from the Liffey somewhat as it is largely spring fed and there are numerous comparisons with the famous Chalkstreams of southern England and Normandy. Like the Liffey, however, there is a great variety of run, riffle, and glide. The Rye Lake This is in truth not a ‘Lake’ but a back up of water caused by the Salmon weir on the grounds of Carton House estate. It is, in essence, a widening and deepening of the Rye Water and offers the superb year-round sport. When in season (March 1st – September 30th) trout fishing can be truly excellent, with a good head of fish in the 3 – 5lb range.
