Gulet Rental in Milazzo
Gulets are boats of Turkish origin (“gulet” in Turkish), originally conceived as a fishing and cargo boat. Made of wood and very spacious, it is ideal for short sea trips and/or longer cruises. The origins of these wonderful sailing boats are not entirely clear. They are traditionally built in the wonderful city of Bodrum, the ancient Halicarnassus, according to a tradition which historically goes back to the city’s greatest shipwright, Ziya Güvendiren. The construction techniques of traditional gulets (boat construction generally averagely lasts 18 months) still derive from master Ziya’s art. Gulets are usually made of wood (originally, pine wood from Turkish forests), but more recently also of mahogany, teak, iroko wood and steel, while maintaining the native charm and beauty. All the gulets are equipped with powerful engines and sails, which can be used for navigation under favorable weather conditions. There are three main types, which differ in the shape of the hull: • Gulet: rounded stern and ketch or schooner sail-plan with 2 or 3 jibs; • Aynakic: square stern and usually ketch sail-plan; • Tirhandil: with pointed stern; originally equipped with lateen sails, they currently dispose of ketch sail-plan. During the Ottoman Empire, these boats were used for transporting both goods and persons, sailing the Aegean Sea, from the Bosphorus to the Black Sea, from the Turkish coast to Greece and the Adriatic Sea, the Ionian Sea, all Sicilian islands, the Aeolian and Egadi Islands, along the Tyrrhenian Sea to Sardinia, the Pontine Islands, the Tremiti and Corsica. Modern gulets are similar to small floating hotels; some of them are very luxurious, purposely designed for charter travels, and ensuring comfort and livability. They have a considerable width if compared to sailing boats, and this results in a great quantity of available living space and in high navigation comfort. Thanks to their spaciousness and consequent comfort, over time gulets have changed from work boats to cruise boats for small groups. Life on board takes place mainly on the large external surface which disposes of large spaces as “sun decks” - especially in the boats with "rounded stern" - offering a pleasant area ideal for relaxing in the shade of the sails. Each cabin has a private bathroom and air conditioning. Canoes, windsurfs, snorkeling equipment (mask and fins), DVDs, CDs, and much more can be usually found onboard. Crews are at least composed of a shipmaster, a sailor and a cook; service includes galley and laundry If you have any questions, we can answer those through GetMyBoat’s messaging platform before you pay.
