Not only do we have charters specializing in all 5 species of salmon, exciting and fast paced tuna trips out of Winter Harbour, and thrilling adventures searching for pacific halibut, but we also offer trips focusing on the ever popular cod, prawns and crab. No matter what you’re on the hunt for, we have the enthusiasm and expertise to take you where the fish are and make your chartered adventure memorable! Salmon Fishing Vancouver Island is known worldwide for its fresh and saltwater fishing. It is also home to the “Salmon Capital of the World” so it’s no surprise that king fishing lies on our beautiful coast. Five salmon species can abundantly be found in our waters and they include sockeye, coho, chinook, pink, and chum. Halibut Fishing The pacific halibut is the worlds largest flatfish. At birth, the halibut has an eye on each side of their head and they swim similar to a salmon. After 6 months, one eye migrates to the other side making them look more like a flounder. When this happens, an act called countershading happens and the top side of the halibut will turn a mottled dark brown while the underside remains white. This colour scheme is so the fish is disguised with the ocean floor from above and with the sky light from below. Pacific halibut are diamond in shape and are more elongated than most flatfish. Their dorsal fin runs from right behind their eyes to the base of their tails. Halibut look very smooth to the human eye which is due to their scales being very small and embedded in the body. Female halibut run much larger than males and can weigh up to 600lbs, however on average, halibut will range between 20 and 50lbs. The halibut off the west coast are a combination of both migratory and resident fish. The majority of halibut taken in by anglers are generally around 30lbs but there are opportunities to catch fish over 80lbs. These fish spend most of their life on the bottom of the sea floor eating most anything that crosses their path (including other halibut) and sit at the top of their food chain. Halibut are a strong and powerful fish and once hooked, their only goal is to get back to the bottom of the ocean, so prepare for a fight. Halibut fishing season generally runs from May to September. Tuna Fishing Albacore tuna are large and built for speed, reaching up to an impressive 80 kilometers per hour. They have a torpedo shaped body and long streamlined fins. This fish is characterized by two dorsal fins, one a dark yellow and the second a pale yellow. The elongated pectoral fins on each side of the body and the crescent shaped tail fin help generate the power to maintain the albacore tuna’s impressive speeds. The albacore tuna is a metallic dark blue dorsally, and shades of silvery-white along their sides and belly. Typically, albacore tuna is fished at least 20 miles off shore due to their migration habits and their need for warm currents and water temperature. Albacore tuna never really rest; they must always be on the move because of their demand for constant oxygen. However, they are a schooling fish which can be up to an astonishing 30 kilometers wide, so once a school is located, the action is exciting! Albacore tuna only reach up to 85lbs in weight and between 30 and 50 inches in length, but they put up quite a fight for their size. They are an extremely powerful fish and quite fun to catch. Tuna fishing season varies due to them following warm water currents. Generally though, their season runs from August and can go well into October and is best done out of Winter Harbour. Scuba Diving Tours Our day charters usually last from 8 to 10 hours, depending on boating conditions and the desires of the group. During a day charter, we anticipate completing at least three different dives – and can sometimes complete four, depending on the area, weather conditions, and experience of the group. We usually leave the dock in either Port Hardy or Nanaimo at 7 a.m. and return between 3 and 5 p.m. We dive Port Hardy from April to October, and dive around the Gulf Islands during the Winter months. Our overnight charters include 2 – 6 days of diving and spending the night either aboard The Rusty Pelican – which can sleep up to six people – or in a local hotel. Participants electing to say in a hotel must book their own accommodation. A maximum of six people can be accommodated overnight on the boat. Participants should be prepared to cook their meals on-board or bring ready-to-eat food. Wilderness Tours Wilderness Tours, Whale Watching, and Magical Hot Springs! the waves with the scenery and wildlife of Canada’s west coast is as enthralling as the sea life. The waters off Vancouver Island are home to a thriving population of whales and dolphins, making whale-watching a popular activity. The most commonly seen whales are the dramatically beautiful black and white orcas. You can also see sea lions on the rocks, seals and otters gliding through the waves, eagles overhead and sometimes spot bears or deer on the shore. A boat is the best way to approach many of the area’s pristine, small islands or the picturesque floating communities. Much of the region has been permanently preserved as a marine park. At Hot Springs Cove, located in Maquinna Provincial Park, you’ll discover a natural wonder: geothermal hot springs that cascade in a waterfall into six interconnected tidal pools and then into the sea. As the hot water cascades down the pools, the water is gradually cooled by ocean swells. Hot Springs Cove is in Clayquot sound, approximately 27 nautical miles northwest of Tofino. What To Expect Onboard: A maximum of six people can be accommodated overnight on the Rusty Pelican (34 feet). Participants should be prepared to cook their meals on-board or bring ready-to-eat food. This boat is primarily used for scuba diving and fishing charters. If you have any questions, we can respond via the GetMyBoat messaging platform before you pay.
