Whale Watching $180 a person for a 3 hour tour min of 4 people $1800 for a privet tour up to six people for 5 1/2 hours Whales and eagles and sea lions, oh my! Better have your cameras ready during this up close and personal experience of Alaska’s most recognized wildlife. Our focus is to introduce you to the humpback whales who return to these waters to feed and play for the summer months. These gentle giants can often be seen breaching, tail lobbing, or swimming on their backs exposing their flippers. Another possible encounter is with the well-known black and white beauty, the Orca (also known as the killer whale). Often traveling with their families in pods these majestic mammals are very social and the top predator of the ocean. While on the water it’s very likely we will have great photo opportunities of bald eagles and sea lions. A more rare site, but not impossible, is spotting brown bears roaming the beaches of surrounding islands. So keep your eyes open and have your camera battery charged as we venture into Alaska’s wild. The Boat The boat is a custom aluminum catamaran made by Munson Co Inc and fully-equipped with all available safety gear. Captain Billy is the real deal. He grew up in Hoonah, making him very familiar with the local geography and wildlife. We had a last minute (<24 hrs) cruise itinerary change and when I emailed him from the ship, he was already aware of the new arrival date and had a plan in place to get us on the water. He took us straight to the whales with a quick pit stop to see a bear walking on the beach. We saw pods of orcas, a large humpback, and then we hit the jackpot with a mother humpback and her BREACHING calf. We stayed and enjoyed his acrobatics until he wore himself out. It was AMAZING! We will never forget this trip. The next time we make it to Alaska, we’re calling Captain Billy!
Captain Billy is a locally raised Tlingit of Hoonah, Alaska. His Tlingit name is Deikee Jaak of the Wooshkeetaan " Eagle and Shark house." Captain Billy started fishing with his father, uncles and grandfather at a young age on the waters of Southeast Alaska. Captain Billy served as a Police Lieutenant for the Hoonah Police Department for over 25 Years. During that time he spent a lot of time on the water helping with search and rescue and boat recovery. Captain Billy is a graduate of the Flagship Maritime Training Center in Washington and is a USCG Certified Captain. In his free time Captain Billy spends most of his time on the water fishing and hunting.
