The Albatross V is a single screw harbour/coastal tug designed and built in 1968 by Miller & Tunnage.  A 20 metres length and 6 metres beam make this classic kauri expedition vessel a spacious and stable platform to view and explore the Bay and surrounds safely, comfortably - and in style! Offering flexible and affordable sightseeing tours ranging from the 2 ½ hour ‘short but oh so sweet’ Explore the Bay cruises, to 4 hour fun filled island adventures, multi day coastal journeys, game fishing expeditions or tailor your own one-off adventures. We, along with our experienced, friendly crew look forward to welcoming you on-board the Albatross V! Albatross V was built in 1968 by Miller and Tunnage at Careys Bay, Port Chalmers for the Napier Harbour Board. She proved to be a solid workhorse, labouring continuously as a tug, pilot ship, coastal purse seiner fishing vessel and latterly as support ship for offshore construction. Boat Specifications & Facilities: - Hull: Timber (round bilge) with 2½” timber hull sheathing. - Main Engine: Lister Blackstone delivering 600 hp @ 800 rpm. - Decks: Timber - Gearbox: MWD on 5:1 redn. Bollard pull tested at 10 tonnes. - Shaft: 8 inch mild steel. Oil filled stern tube. - Auxillary Engine: Perkins 4 cylinder driving 230 Volt – 30 kVA. Second portable generator – Honda 2 kVA X 2 - Steering: Wheel/toggle/auto-pilot. 2 stations. 2 independently operated steering systems. - Tankage Fuel: 6000 Litres in 3 tanks – 2 fwd and 1 in E/R (extra fuel capacity available). - Water: 1200 litres - Fuel Consumption: When towing (including genset), vessel burns 50 litres per hour. Running free at around 8 knots, vessel burns approx 25–30 LPH. - Electrical System: 240 V, 24 V, 12 V, and 415 V (three phase power). - Speeds Cruise: 9.0 knots (650/700 rpm) - Max: 10 knots (800 rpm) - Drystores/Voids: Massive dry store under aft deck. Divided into 3 compartments. Aft deck capable of a 14 tonne load. - Towing/Salvage Equipment: Tow posts on the bow. Dedicated stern towing bollard tow rope. Storage winch, Full navigation lights etc. Spotlights fore and aft. - Capstan: Anchor winch. Double drum. 100 m chain per side. EPIRB: 406. - Presently Rigged For: Harbour/coastal towing/salvage work - Electronics: Kenwood SSB, Icom VHF, GME VHF, Furuno FCV1000 sounder, compass, Furuno 1831 MK2 radar, Furuno FAP 300 auto-pilot, Furuno Navigator GP50 GPS, Furuno 1650 chart plotter, Lenovo C-map chart storage, iridium satellite phone. - Cooking: Gas oven/grill, Microwave oven, gas BBQ - Accommodation: 12 berths – 10 passengers, 2 crew – all recently refitted. Spacious toilet and shower in forecastle plus additional berths in aft quarters with shower and toilet. All accommodation has 230 volt power and lighting, with heaters, as well as 24 volt lighting. - Books: 2 stability books; one each for passenger and work use. The latter allows an 18 tonne deck load on the aft deck. - Crane: Recently fitted and surveyed Hiab crane, 5 tonne capacity, 13 m reach. Stowed behind wheelhouse. - Winch: Rope storage winch on deck for tow rope capable of handling a 300 tonne barge. - Shelter: An 8 m x 4 m PCV cover has been constructed on the aft deck for shelter, alfresco dining, storage or work area as required. - Deck: Stainless four-burner BBQ, table and chairs. Full wetsuits are provided and will keep you snug! • What age applies for a child rate? - Our child rate applies to children aged 4 to 12. Under 4’s are infants. It is parents responsibility to supervise their children if they decide to swim. Our crew reserves the right to ask for proof of age on board the vessel. • When is the peak season? - The peak season for The Bay of Islands is December to late-February as well as most warm weekends and public holidays. • Do you offer flotation aids and tuition for nervous snorkelers? - We have noodles and life vests on board to assist with flotation as well as helpful, experienced crew in the water offering tuition/help for unsure swimmers and snorkelers. Wetsuits are great for flotation also and are provided to each guest. • A few of the people in our group won't be snorkelling or swimming - are there other activities they can enjoy? - Our 4 hr Island Activity Expedition is focused around the natural environment which offers swimming, snorkelling, paddle boarding and sightseeing activities. There are land based activities for those not going in the water such as walks on the island, paddle boarding, relaxing on the beach or simply watching the activities from the boat with a hot drink. • I am pregnant, will I still be able to participate in the activities? - Yes, our expeditions cater for everyone and our crew are always near to ensure you will have a safe, fun and relaxing experience. • What can we expect on our 2 ½ hour Explore The Bay Expedition? - Once you have boarded the vessel you will be introduced to the vessels facilities and explained the safety information, we will cruise out around the bay where you will experience the breathtaking beauty. Once underway the crew will provide informative information of the local area. A morning or afternoon tea will be served during the expedition consisting of light refreshments including hot drinks and a snack selection. • What can we expect on our 4 hr Island Activity Expedition? - Once you have boarded the vessel, you will be introduced to the vessels facilities and explained the safety information; we will then head out to an island where you can partake in any of the activities on offer. Once underway the crew will present an informative demonstration on how to use the equipment available. After arriving at our destination a snorkelling orientation briefing will be conducted including information about the marine life you may encounter. - You may choose to paddleboard, go ashore and explore or have a guided snorkelling tour which are offered in small groups and each activity is conducted in a relaxed and safe environment, allowing you enough time to familiarise yourself with the environment. After a refreshing snack or hot beverage you will be invited to explore the environment at your own pace. A morning or afternoon tea will be served during the expedition consisting of light refreshments including hot drinks and a snack selection. Prior to disembarking, guests are given time to change out of wetsuits and enjoy a hot drink. • When do your expeditions depart?
