The Sugar Trail in Suriname, Paramaribo

Cuddy Cabin/Walk Around
4 Guests

About This Boat

Sugar has played an enormously important role in Surinam’s history. When slavery was common here, there were hundreds of sugarcane plantations in Surinam. During the time when contract labourers were used, the sugar refinery at Mariënburg played an important role. Surinam rum, which was originally produced in this factory, is still produced in Paramaribo.

We will take you along this historical time line on ‘the sugar trail’. You will enjoy a relaxed trip to Commewijne, and learn about this district’s bitter-sweet past.

Concordia plantation
In the morning we will take a boat trip on the Upper Commewijne river to the former Concordia sugar plantation. You will discover the remains of a water mill that belonged to a sugary refinery, and dates back to around 1830. Although nature has covered history’s tracks here, you will learn about the history of Surinam’s slavery through vivid stories.

Tamanredjo
The town of Tamanredjo is famous for its Javanese cuisine. We will enjoy a delightful lunch here.

Mariënburg
In the afternoon we will delve into the Mariënburg plantation’s past by visiting the former factory site. A former labourer will give us a tour of the site. His fascinating stories will take you back to the time of the contract labourers, and bring back the ruins to life.

Boat trip on the Surinam river
We will travel back to Paramaribo by boat on the Surinam river. During this enjoyable boat trip, you will learn about the process of how sugar is converted into rum, and you will be able to put your taste buds to the test.
