What You Can Expect

We provide a small ship cruising and wildlife holiday on the beautiful west coast of Scotland in the Hebrides or in Argyll; an unforgettable adventure for all ages.

Each trip is a unique holiday experience on board St Hilda, a traditional, wooden 54ft ketch going to sea with only six guests, but with your own onboard skipper and cook: perfect for singles, couples and groups or families. The St Hilda was built in 1973 in St Monans by a family-owned (Miller) boatyard in Fife, specifically for sail training with a crew of 20 which is why, with only six guests, St Hilda is so spacious. She is one of the smallest of the “Tall Ships” and has competed in several Tall Ship races.

Your Experience Aboard The St. Hilda

As the ex-tall ship St Hilda travels through the Sounds of the Hebrides, visits the remote islands and anchors in quiet bays and sea lochs you will enjoy an incredible amount of rare bird and marine life. We can set the sails and, just below the surface of the sea, we can sample and examine the minute and spectacular world of plankton. We can also shoot a lobster pot, explore the rock pools, swim off the boat and even fish for supper. Or, we can also learn how to tie knots or just simply sit back (and photograph) and enjoy the wildlife.

Contemplating the Wildlife

Over 24 species of birds have been recorded in one day: from large rafts of Manx Shearwaters and Guillemots, to sightings of sea eagles. We regularly see porpoises, dolphins and seals and occasionally orcas, minke whales and basking sharks. Anchored near the shore we spot wild mountain goats, roe deer and otters. In the St Hilda's tender we can carefully approach colonies of grey and common seals basking in the sun.

Accommodation

After 2 years of intensive refurbishing St Hilda is now offering a spacious accommodation for up to six guests and two crew.

The roomy deck saloon is where everyone dines and socializes and enjoys a convivial atmosphere that is encouraged by life aboard the sea going-going wooden boat.

Cabins are warm and comfortable: a double en-suite, a twin en-suite and two single berths with adjacent toilet and shower rooms. All linen and towels are supplied.

The outdoor decks are perfect for spotting wildlife and relaxing and eating al fresco when the boat is at anchor or under way. You also have plenty of space to embark your own equipment: bicycles, canoes, windsurf board, sup and others...

Your Crew

Your professional skipper is passionate about boats, sailing, and the natural environment of the Hebrides and the sea lochs of Argyll. He is happy to pass on his knowledge to those on board while ensuring his shipmates have as much fun as possible. You also have your own onboard cook who provides wonderful meals, freshly prepared from the galley.
