About This Boat

Planning a cruise with us!

A cruise on the Porpoise is possibly a once in a life time custom made experience where you not only go sailing but you also explore the terrain, fish, eat the bounties of the land and learn to sail. Our rates are affordable for the average person when you break it down.

We charge for the boat’s time rather than per head. Our standard trip is six days and five nights at $5000.00. For two couples or four people this works out to 2500.00 per couple or 1250.00 per person. This is comparable to a cruise  ship yet is a custom experience where you learn something and can get out to explore nature first hand. We can take up to six people adding 500.00 per head for the extra two. Four is ideal.

The cost includes all food and use of the recreational equipment. The cost of getting to and from the point of departure is not included nor the cost of sail manuals. A PCOC card can be obtained by taking the exam for twenty dollars.

It is our goal that our guests are enabled to experience sailing, get training and have fun while doing it. We want to be able to sail without the costs and pressure of owning and operating your own boat. Let us take you there.

Summer guests receive training and certification on a sail training level. Study books are sent beforehand which must be completed before practical training on the water. Basic introduction to sailing with PCOC exam and card is available.

Special five day four night trips are organized in the spring (May-June) specifically for sail training. Men’s sail training (up to six persons at a time) or Ladies sail training (same) can be an opportunity to learn a new skill with a friend, have an adventure on the water and make progress toward being able to handle your own boat or a chartered boat on the coast. At $600.00 per head this can be a cost effective way to get introduced to sailing on the coast. Food is included but cost of ISPA manual is separate.

We are not specifically a whale watching boat but whales are a regular occurrence as we travel from place to place especially on the Central coast but also in all our other itineraries. We are regularly visited by porpoises, sea lions, orcas, myriad harbor seals, river otters and occasional sea otters not to mention the multitude varieties of sea birds, fish and land mammals (bears) etc.

Charter Itineraries: Pacific Encounters......Three areas of focus….Gulf Islands....Fjordland areas....Central Coast

We are intimately acquainted with the entire BC coast from Washington to Alaska and can custom arrange any itinerary and number of days our clients choose. Because most people do not know the coast well enough to choose we have proven charter destinations in choice areas guaranteed to delight first time visitors or experienced boaters. We can show you what you haven’t seen and take you where others do not go.

Our three areas of focus will give you the option to visit sunny more civilized South Coast Gulf Islands, or the more wilderness oriented fjords of Jervis Inlet, Hotham Sound, Desolation Sound, or the even more wild coastline of the Central Coast beyond Vancouver island where the Ocean Beaches, abundant wildlife, few boaters and great fishing make this experience a once in a lifetime opportunity.

South Coast--Gulf Islands

*Availability-May through September
*Characterized by sunny weather, beachcombing, glorious sunsets, and visits to sites of guests' interest including coves, Gulf Island villages, markets, sites of native art and culture. The Gulf Islands have wineries to visit, resorts and a very safe environment in which to learn to sail while still preserving the pristine nature of these unique islands.

*Because this area is literally in our back yard we can usually visit them on short notice for a weekend ramble with friends or a week long vacation with your children. The boat gets us to the beaches where the whole family can spend their days with very comfortable lodgings on the Porpoise to come back to. You dont have to worry about the responsibilities of navigation, anchoring, cooking etc. That is our job.

Jervis Inlet, Princess Louisa, Hotham Sound, Desolation Sound.
Tied at the mouth of the cove in front of the Nelson island cabin.

*Availability-June through September
*The next step north after the Gulf Islands to wilder regions, Hotham Sound -Jervis Inlet is a boater's paradise, with unmatched mountainous beauty, where eagles and seals abound, and swimming is delightful in some of the warmest water on the entire BC coast
*This fjordland area penetrates forty miles into the coastal mountains ending in breathtaking Princess Louisa, Malibu, and Chatterbox Falls.

Captain John and his wife Lyza have established a completely isolated cabin site on Nelson Island where guests can stop over for hikes, saunas, sunbathing, and oysters and clams right off their beach.
*This itinerary is especially suited to the five day cruise although shorter trips or extensions can be arranged according to guests' wishes
*Sailing instruction and training for ISPA (International Sailing and Power Association) certification available on request.
