The raids were the first of almost 100 air raids against Australia During 1942-43.Join our experienced crew in sharing Darwin’s story throughout the turbulent period of WWII in which the city was bombed more times than Pearl Harbour. We Depart from the small ships landing at the beginning of Stokes Hill Wharf, one of the area’s most heavily bombed due to its strategic location. We will cruise past the current Navel Base, past Doctors Gully, home to the Catalina Flying Boats base. We will pass over the wreck of the USS Peary, an American Naval ship, stationed in Darwin Harbour that was sunk during the first air raid killing 91 men on board, and pay tribute to it and the eight other boats still lying on the ocean floor. Then on past the original boom net site and past East Point Reserve, home to the Darwin Military Museum, with the gun turrents still on display.
